Capsular Contracture

Capsular contracture is a complication that can occur after breast implant surgery, where the natural scar tissue (called a capsule) that forms around the implant becomes unusually thick, tight, or hardened. This tightening can cause the breast to feel firm, look distorted, or become uncomfortable.

After any breast implant procedure, the body naturally forms a thin layer of scar tissue around the implant as part of normal healing. In capsular contracture, this tissue shrinks and compresses the implant instead of remaining soft and flexible.

Symptoms range from mild firmness to significant pain, tightness, and visible changes in breast shape or position. In more severe cases, the breast may appear unusually round, elevated, or asymmetrical.

Diagnosis is usually made through a physical examination, and imaging such as ultrasound or MRI may be used to evaluate the implant and surrounding tissue.

Treatment depends on severity. Mild cases may be monitored or managed with medications and massage techniques, while more advanced cases may require surgery. Surgical options include removing or releasing the scar tissue (capsulectomy) and possibly replacing the implant.

Overall, capsular contracture is a known but manageable complication of breast augmentation or reconstruction, and treatment can often restore comfort and improve appearance.
