Kidney Disease
Kidney disease refers to a condition in which the kidneys are damaged and cannot properly filter waste products, excess fluids, and toxins from the blood. The kidneys also play an important role in regulating blood pressure, maintaining electrolyte balance, and supporting red blood cell production, so impairment can affect the entire body.
Kidney disease can be acute or chronic. Acute kidney injury develops suddenly, often due to infection, dehydration, medication effects, or reduced blood flow to the kidneys. Chronic kidney disease (CKD), on the other hand, develops gradually over time and is most commonly caused by diabetes, hypertension, or long-term kidney inflammation.
In the early stages, kidney disease may cause few or no symptoms. As it progresses, symptoms can include fatigue, swelling in the legs or face, changes in urination, nausea, loss of appetite, itching, and difficulty concentrating. Advanced disease may lead to serious complications such as fluid overload, anemia, bone disease, and buildup of toxins in the blood.
Diagnosis is made through blood tests (such as creatinine and estimated glomerular filtration rate), urine tests to detect protein or blood, and imaging studies to assess kidney structure. Regular monitoring helps determine the severity and progression of the disease.
Treatment depends on the underlying cause and stage of disease. It may include controlling blood pressure and blood sugar, dietary changes, medications to manage symptoms and complications, and avoiding substances that can harm the kidneys. In advanced stages, dialysis or kidney transplantation may be required.
Overall, kidney disease is a serious but often manageable condition. Early detection and appropriate treatment can slow progression and help preserve kidney function for as long as possible.
