CT Scan (Computed Tomography Scan)

A Computed Tomography (CT) scan is a diagnostic imaging test that uses X-rays and computer processing to create detailed cross-sectional images of the inside of the body. It provides more detailed information than a standard X-ray by showing multiple “slices” of organs, bones, and soft tissues.

During a CT scan, the patient lies on a motorized table that moves through a circular scanner. The X-ray tube rotates around the body, capturing images from different angles. A computer then combines these images to produce detailed cross-sectional views, which can also be reconstructed into 3D images if needed.

The procedure is quick and painless, usually taking only a few minutes. Patients are required to remain still to ensure image clarity. In some cases, a contrast dye may be given orally or injected into a vein to help highlight blood vessels, organs, or specific abnormalities.

CT scans are commonly used to evaluate injuries, internal bleeding, infections, tumors, and diseases affecting organs such as the brain, chest, abdomen, and pelvis. They are also frequently used in emergency situations due to their speed and accuracy.

Although CT scans involve higher radiation exposure than standard X-rays, they are generally considered safe when medically necessary. Healthcare providers carefully balance the benefits of accurate diagnosis with the minimal risks of radiation exposure.

It is a powerful and highly detailed imaging tool that plays a crucial role in modern medical diagnosis and treatment planning.
