Medial Branch Block (MBB)
A Medial Branch Block (MBB) is a minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedure used to identify and manage pain originating from the facet joints of the spine. These small joints, located between the vertebrae, can become a source of chronic neck or back pain due to arthritis, injury, or degeneration.
During the procedure, a physician uses imaging guidance such as fluoroscopy (X-ray) to accurately place a thin needle near the medial branch nerves. These nerves carry pain signals from the facet joints to the brain. A small amount of local anesthetic is injected to temporarily numb the nerves and block pain signals from that specific area.
The main purpose of a Medial Branch Block is diagnostic, meaning it helps determine whether the facet joints are the true source of pain. If the patient experiences significant temporary pain relief after the injection, it confirms that the targeted nerves are contributing to the pain. In some cases, the procedure may also provide short-term therapeutic relief.
MBB is often performed as part of the evaluation process before considering longer-lasting treatments such as Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA). It is typically done on an outpatient basis and requires little recovery time, allowing patients to return home the same day.
After the procedure, patients may experience temporary soreness at the injection site. Risks are generally low but can include infection, bleeding, or temporary numbness or weakness.
