Interventional Nephrology

Interventional nephrology is a subspecialty of medicine focused on performing minimally invasive procedures related to kidney disease and dialysis care.

A key part of interventional nephrology involves procedures such as arteriovenous (AV) fistula creation support, dialysis catheter placement and removal, angioplasty to open narrowed blood vessels, and thrombectomy to remove clots from dialysis access sites. These procedures are often performed using imaging guidance such as ultrasound or fluoroscopy to ensure accuracy and safety.

The goal of interventional nephrology is to improve dialysis outcomes by maintaining reliable vascular access, reducing complications, and minimizing the need for surgical intervention. Many procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, allowing patients to return home the same day.
