Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a procedure designed to reduce the size and weight of overly large breasts. It is commonly performed to relieve physical discomfort and improve quality of life for individuals who experience symptoms such as back, neck, or shoulder pain, skin irritation, or difficulty with physical activity due to breast size.

During the procedure, a surgeon removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to achieve a smaller, lighter, and more proportionate breast size. The nipple and areola are often repositioned to match the new breast shape while preserving a natural appearance. The specific surgical technique used depends on the amount of tissue being removed and the patient’s individual anatomy.

Breast reduction surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia. Incisions are made in carefully chosen locations to minimize visible scarring while allowing effective reshaping of the breast. The remaining tissue is then reshaped, and the incisions are closed with sutures.

Recovery involves swelling, bruising, and temporary discomfort, which gradually improve over several weeks. Patients are usually advised to wear a supportive surgical bra and avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity during the healing period. Most people can return to normal daily activities within a few weeks, although full recovery may take longer.
