PD Catheter Placement

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter placement is a procedure performed to insert a soft, flexible tube into the abdomen, allowing patients with kidney failure to receive peritoneal dialysis. This catheter provides access to the abdominal cavity, where a special dialysis solution is used to remove waste products, excess fluids, and toxins from the body.

The procedure is usually performed under local or general anesthesia by a surgeon or interventional radiologist. A small incision is made in the abdomen, and the catheter is carefully positioned within the peritoneal cavity. Once in place, the catheter is secured, and the incision is closed and covered with a sterile dressing. In many cases, the catheter is allowed to heal for one to two weeks before regular dialysis treatments begin, although urgent-start dialysis may be possible in certain situations.

After placement, patients receive detailed instructions on caring for the catheter site, maintaining good hygiene, and recognizing signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, pain, drainage, or fever. Proper catheter care is essential to reduce the risk of complications, including infection and catheter blockage.

A PD catheter allows patients to perform dialysis at home, offering greater flexibility and independence compared with in-center hemodialysis. With appropriate training, regular follow-up, and careful catheter care, many patients successfully manage their dialysis while maintaining an active and fulfilling lifestyle.
