End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)
End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) is the final stage of chronic kidney disease, in which the kidneys have lost most or all of their ability to function effectively. At this stage, the kidneys can no longer adequately remove waste products, excess fluids, or maintain the body’s balance of electrolytes and chemicals.
ESRD most commonly develops over time due to long-standing conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, chronic glomerulonephritis, or other progressive kidney diseases. As kidney function declines, patients may experience symptoms such as fatigue, swelling in the legs or face, nausea, loss of appetite, shortness of breath, and changes in urination.
Because the kidneys can no longer sustain essential body functions in ESRD, treatment is necessary for survival. The main treatment options include dialysis (hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis) and kidney transplantation. Dialysis helps perform some of the kidney’s functions by removing waste and excess fluid from the blood, while a kidney transplant can restore long-term kidney function in eligible patients.
In addition to these treatments, patients are often managed with medications, dietary changes, and fluid restrictions to help control symptoms and prevent complications such as high potassium levels, anemia, and bone disease.
Although ESRD is a serious and life-threatening condition, advances in dialysis and transplantation allow many patients to live longer and maintain a meaningful quality of life with appropriate medical care and support.
