Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive medical procedure that uses heat generated by radiofrequency energy to destroy abnormal or problematic tissue. It is commonly used to treat chronic pain conditions.

During the procedure, a physician inserts a thin needle-like probe into the targeted area using guided imaging. Once correctly positioned, the probe delivers controlled radiofrequency energy, which heats and disrupts the nerve tissue or abnormal cells. This process reduces the ability of nerves to send pain signals.

RFA is frequently used for chronic pain management, particularly in conditions affecting the spine, such as arthritis-related back or neck pain. It is also used in cardiology to treat abnormal heart rhythms by targeting small areas of heart tissue responsible for irregular electrical signals. In oncology, it may be used to destroy small tumors in organs such as the liver, kidneys, or lungs when surgery is not an option.

The procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia and sometimes mild sedation. Most patients experience minimal discomfort and can return to normal activities within a short period.
